I want to go back.. After a day of hiking and trekking the Mendenhall Glacier, we chose to go with Skagway Float tours for their 4hr. hike and float tour. If we had not been exhausted from the day before, this excursion would have been a tremendous let down, but since we could barely walk, it was ok. Our guide, Bob, picked us up at the pier in Skagway, with 4 others already in the van. We headed into Dyea to start our hike, narrated and stopping on the way to see bald eagles, that was cool nature cued them at the right time ;-) If you like to hike 100ft and stop after each rock, this hike is for you. It's a gorgeous hike, but having been reminded of it every time we took 3 steps was a bit much. Plus, pointing out bear scat from a year ago really wasn't impressive as our guide seemed to think each of the 30 times he did it. I'll give it to him though, he knew the terrain and the history of the area. In that respect, he was fantastic. We did have older people on the hike, so we understood the slow pace, but the elaboration at each stop repeating the stop before did get old. We eventually reached the Taiya (sp?) river and rafted back. An easy going hike and float. If you want a casual, slow, and detailed hike on the Chilkoot trail, this is for you - you could not find a better guide. However, if you like to enjoy your hike as you go and appreciate the beauty on your own, get a map of the area and a rental car and do on your own. We'd do the second option if in Skagway again.
