A little off the beaten path but well worth it. A truly Alaskan experience: log cabins and lodge, great hospitality, classic food and peaceful location. Kathy is an amazing hostess and goes above and beyond. She will give you great ideas on what to do and arrange for excursions. They even have bicycles to explore the local area that is rich in history and scenic beauty. I have actually stayed at the Chilkoot Trail Outpost on two occasions, the first in August 2016 for 3 nights and now for 2 nights. Last year it was just my daughter and I. We stayed in a very large cabin which contained 2 large comfortable beds and everything that one could want. This year I am traveling with my daughter and son and we are in a cabin that has 3 beds. The cabins are clean and very well maintained. Last year I asked the owner Kathy if the cabin was new. The cabins are actually 16 years old but you’d never know it because of the way the property is maintained and cared for by owners, Kathy and her husband Fred. The Chilkoot Trail Outpost is located just outside of town in the beautifully scenic Dyea Flats area, also the site of great hiking. Kathy and Fred are great hosts; they treat you like you are a guest in their home. They will educate you on the area and make recommendations. They have a nice dining area on premises and breakfast was included with our room rate and includes scrambled eggs, ham, pancakes and other accompaniments. It is made to order and it is excellent. A special dinner if offered at a very reasonable price. There are two types of fish as well as chicken and steak. You choose two of the above which is served with salad, potato and cold slaw. For dessert, you get all of the fixings for s’mores, which you can make by the camp fire. I have stayed at other places in the Skagway area and this is undoubtedly the best. I would recommend the Chilkoot Trail Outpost without hesitation. Loved staying here. Staff great, food excellent, cabins cute and comfortable. When my party and I first arrived in the congested downtown area of Skagway, we weren't too happy. However, a short and beautiful drive twenty minutes or so away will bring you to the Chilkoot Trail Outpost. Our stay at this lodge has been the highlight so far of our two week vacation in Alaska. Great cabins for a great price, bikes available for use (just need to sign a waiver), and breakfast is provided! Dinner is available for purchase and it's amazing. Get the steak and salmon :) Rooms were cozy and immaculate. Staff was super friendly, and the good food was good. It's a few miles outside of Skagway, so probably not the best for people who want to be near town. Only complaints are that there was no Wi-Fi, and the shower struggled to make it to lukewarm.
